What services do you offer clients?

National Crisis Support offers free mental health resources and services (ages 11+). National Crisis Support also offers free educational, mental health opportunities to mental health practitioners. Some clients who are not in a mental health crisis might receive free individual/couples/family counseling. More questions? Would you mind emailing us at counseling@nationalcrisissupport.org?

Can the client choose their therapist (gender specific, etc?)

National Crisis Support considers the client’s preferences. However, it might take longer for the client to be matched with a mental health professional of their preference.

What is the Intake Process?

National Crisis Support asks the client to send an email to counseling@nationalcrisissupport.org. The National Crisis Support volunteer will then send the client an invitation to TheraNest (client platform), where the client fills out Intake paperwork and sends their copy of the ID. Finally, National Crisis Support will evaluate the client the type of service offered.

As an intern, what platform will I use with clients?

National Crisis Support offers interns the HIPPA compliant Google Workspace access.

Are there any set hours to volunteer or can I volunteer during, after and/or weekends?

Volunteers can make their schedules.

How long will I able to volunteer?

It is up to the volunteer to decide how long they would like to volunteer. Please, be cognisant that each client receives 6-10 sessions each.

How many clients are on the waitlist and are there a lot of clients within National Crisis Support?

Currently, National Crisis Support has a waitlist. The number of clients on the waitlist depends on the availability of mental health volunteers and their preferences. Currently, National Crisis Support has close to 800 clients in the system. That number is increasing daily. 

What do I do if my client has suicidal or self-harm ideations?

National Crisis Support asks the volunteers to consult with their clinical supervisors regarding clients who have suicidal or self-harm ideations. Also, please refer the client to an appropriate resource as soon as possible since National Crisis Support does not offer counseling services to these clients at this time.

Does National Crisis Support offer services to clients in various states?

National Crisis Support provides services nationwide. However, the organization only provides counseling to clients that reside in the same state as where the mental health volunteer and their supervisor are licensed and reside.

What services do you offer volunteers who carry the following licenses LMSW, LPC-I/A, or LMFT-I/A?

Are sessions limited?

Due to many clients on the waiting list, National Crisis Support offers 6-10 sessions for 50 minutes each. Group sessions might be between 60 and 90 minutes.

As a mental health professional, what platform can I use with clients?

For case management, National Crisis Support offers the HIPPA compliant TheraNest platform. For video chat, National Crisis Support asks the volunteers to use a HIPPA compliant Telehealth platform of their choosing. Some volunteers use the free Doxy.me platform.

As a mental health professional, will my supervisor need to be a volunteer as well?

Yes, the supervisor (LCSW-S, LPC-S, LMFT-S) needs to become a volunteer. However, their paperwork is at a minimum.

As a mental health professional, how many clients can I see per week?

It is up to the volunteer to decide on the number of clients they would like to see per week. The volunteer can provide services to individuals, couples, or families.

What kind of clients do you accept?

National Crisis Support accepts all clients (ages 11+). However, services offered vary by the client’s needs. For example, a client with active suicidal ideations will be provided resources or referred out. Other clients who do not have active suicidal or self-harm ideations or substance abuse might be offered free counseling and groups.

How does National Crisis Support handle transfers if the client no longer meets requirements for services?

National Crisis Support asks the mental health volunteer to consult with their clinical supervisor to refer the client to appropriate resources.

Are all volunteer and internship opportunities virtual?

Yes, National Crisis Support volunteer and internship opportunities are virtual.
